Galaxy S22 bootloop after One UI: what to do before paying £500

By Khizar Asim · ·

February's security patch has left a lot of Galaxy S22s bootlooping, crashing and burning battery. Here's what's really going on, and the fixes to try first.

Galaxy S22 bootloop after One UI: what to do before paying £500

What's happening with the Galaxy S22

Samsung rolled out a February 2026 security patch on 9 February, and a chunk of Galaxy S22 owners have been regretting installing it ever since. Reddit threads are running past 140 comments. Symptoms are consistent: bootloops, launcher crashes, One UI freezing mid-use, battery draining through the floor. This is the second time in about a year — there's already an active class-action over a late-2024 update that allegedly bricked S22s the same way.

What you'll see if it's hit yours

  • Phone restarts itself every few minutes, sometimes stuck on the boot logo
  • One UI launcher crashes the moment you unlock
  • Apps close themselves mid-use, sometimes with a black flash
  • Battery drops 20–30% an hour sitting idle
  • Device runs warm even when you aren't using it
  • Fingerprint or face unlock stops registering after the patch

Don't pay £500 for a 'motherboard replacement' yet

A few S22 owners we've seen in Leicester this month were quoted £400–£500 by Samsung support for a logic board swap. In almost every case the board was fine. The firmware got corrupted during the patch install — usually because the phone hit a low-battery state part-way through the write — and a proper recovery process gets it back without touching the hardware. On a four-year-old S22 it's rarely worth spending half the price of a new phone on a board you probably don't need.

Fixes to try first (your data stays put)

  • Force reboot: hold Power + Volume Down for 10 seconds. Sometimes that's all it takes.
  • Wipe cache partition: power off, hold Volume Up + Power, let go when you see the Samsung logo, pick 'Wipe cache partition'. This clears stale system cache without touching photos, messages or apps.
  • Boot into Safe Mode for an hour — hold Power, long-press 'Power off', tap it again for Safe Mode. If it stops crashing, a third-party app is the trigger and you can uninstall the culprit.
  • Back up with Smart Switch on a PC before you do anything drastic. If the phone can see a computer over USB, you can usually pull photos, contacts and messages off even when the UI is broken.

When it actually is hardware

Some S22s genuinely came out of this patch with damage — almost always a battery that was already past its best and finally gave up during the forced reboots, occasionally eMMC (the phone's internal storage) corruption that a software recovery can't fix. That's where proper diagnosis matters. We open the phone, test the cell under load, and check if the board is actually healthy. A new OEM-spec battery on a tired S22 is £60–80 fitted at your door, and that's the fix nine times out of ten.

If your S22 is looping right now

Stop cycling the power. Every forced restart during a bootloop can nudge the filesystem further toward properly corrupt. Message us a photo of whatever screen it's stuck on plus your model number (Settings > About, or printed inside the SIM tray) and we'll tell you on chat whether it's a recovery-mode job you can do in ten minutes, or whether you want us out. Most Leicester postcodes: same-day callout.
